45th Service Squadron: A Brief History
The 45th Service Squadron was activated on 1 April 1941 at Mitchell Field in New York as the 45th Materiel Squadron, a subordinate unit of the 33rd Air Base Group. On 24 May 1941, the 33rd Air Base Group and all subordinate units were relocated to Grenier Field in Manchester, New Hampshire. In May, 1942, the organization placed under the Air Service Command and the group was re-designated the 33rd Service Group in July. At that time, the squadron was re-designated the 45th Service Squadron.
The 45th Service Squadron was one of two service squadrons in the 33rd Service Group, the other being the 41st Service Squadron. On 26 December 1942, the 33rd Service group was ordered to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey to prepare for embarking upon transports to the UK. The group arrived in Gourock, Scotland on 13 January 1943. Upon arrival, the 45th Service Squadron was assigned to the 4th Fighter Group at USAAF Station 356 at Debden, Essex. Though still a part of the 33rd Service Group, it would operate independently there for the duration of the war.
Elements of the 45th began arriving at Station F-356 on 27 January 1943. By 1 April 1943, the squadron's strength was up to six officers, two warrant officers and two hundred ten enlisted men with Captain Sumner S. Webster in command. The 45th Service Squadron provided all second and third echelon maintenance for the 4th Fighter Group, servicing the Spitfire Mk Vb, the massive P-47 Thunderbolt and the long-ranged P-51 Mustang.
The 45th Service Squadron was in operation at Debden until 15 April 1945, when it was disbanded under the provisions of 8th Air Force Headquarters General Order No. 52. Three officers and thirty-six enlisted men were assigned to 438th Headquarters and Base Services Squadron, while three officers and thirty men were transferred to the 688th Air Materiel Squadron. The remaining three officers and one hundred and fifty-seven enlisted men were assigned to the 864the Air Engineering Squadron.
