Detachment A, 1126th Quartermaster Company, Service Group (AVN): A Brief History
The 1126th Quartermaster Company, Service Group (Aviation) Company was organized in April 1943 as the 173rd Quartermaster Platoon, Service Center (Aviation) on 16 April 1942 at Bowman Field in Kentucky. The unit eventually was designated the 173rd Quartermaster Company, Service Group (Aviation). On 30 April 1943, the unit's designation was again changed, this time to the1126th Quartermaster Company, Service Group (Aviation).
The company arrived in England in August, 1943. On 20 August, Detachment A was sent by train to Debden, with the men arriving on station at 1700. Initially, the men of the 1126th were attached the the 45th Service Group. But on 25 August the company was 'relieved from attached' and began operations as a separate unit. Detachment strength on 31 August 1943 was two officers and thirty-five enlisted men. The company operated continuously from August 1943 until mid-April 1945.
On 15 April 1945, Detachment A was disbanded, and all three officers and 34 enlisted men were assigned to the 688th Air Materiel Squadron. In the last official unit history entry, CO Capt. Kenneth Patton wrote: "This is the final chapter in the history of this detachment, and to the officers and men concerned it marks the finis to one of the best little outfits that ever came over to the land of 'Mild and Bitters.' One and all are justly proud of the record they helped to set and maintain in the functions of their military mission, and in the high standard of good teamwork and general esprit de corps which they preserved throughout long months of monotonous operations. Theirs was an inglorious and an inconspicuous job, but they are reaping the harvest of that inner satisfaction which is always sown in the knowledge of a job well done."
